Some rodent problems cannot wait for next week. A rat running across the kitchen floor, a mouse in a child's bedroom, a rat trapped in a wall that you can hear struggling, or fresh gnawing on wiring in the attic all call for a fast visit.
Same-day appointments are often available in San Diego County, depending on the provider and your area. When you call, say plainly that it is urgent and describe what is happening right now. Ask whether a rush visit costs more than a standard one, since many providers charge extra for same-day or after-hours work.
What a fast-response visit includes
An urgent visit is about getting control of the living space first, then planning the full job:
- Finding and removing the rodent in the room, or trapping it in place
- Setting snap traps in covered boxes along the walls where it is traveling
- A quick check of the obvious entry points: garage door, door sweeps, pipe gaps under sinks
- A look at any chewed wiring or gas lines so you know whether to call an electrician or the gas company
- Booking a full inspection and sealing visit
The urgent visit rarely finishes the job. Treat it as step one, and get the rest in writing.
Step by step
- Call and describe what you see, where it is and whether anyone is at risk
- Close the door to the room and put a rolled towel at the bottom gap
- Keep pets and kids out of that room
- The technician arrives, removes or traps the rodent and sets traps nearby
- The technician checks for the entry point and seals what can be sealed that day
- A follow-up visit handles the full inspection, sealing and cleanup
What to do while you wait
Do not try to grab a rat or mouse with your hands. Rats can bite, and the CDC lists bites and scratches among the ways people catch rat-bite fever. Open an outside door in the room if you can, and close the inside door, which gives the animal a way out. Do not use poison bait indoors in a hurry. A poisoned rat can die in a wall where you cannot reach it, and that smell lasts. See dead rodent smell.
If you see chewed wiring with exposed copper, turn off the circuit at the panel if it is safe to do so and call an electrician. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company or 911 from outside.
Why urgent calls are common in San Diego
Roof rats travel along the tops of walls and drop down through gaps around attic hatches, recessed lights and plumbing chases. That is how a rat ends up in a closet or under a bathroom sink without ever passing through a door. Late summer and fall are busy, when fruit and palm seeds are plentiful and young rats spread out.
Garages are the other source. Many San Diego garages connect straight to the house through a door or a laundry area, and roll-up door seals wear out fast in the sun. A mouse in the garage on Monday can be in the pantry by Friday. See rats in the garage and car engine.
After the emergency
Once the immediate problem is handled, ask for the full plan: inspection, sealing, trapping and cleanup, with prices for each. Without the sealing step you may be making another urgent call in a month. The rat control and rodent exclusion pages explain what that full job covers.
